He Kupu
Whakataki:
Te Puke ki Hikurangi is the name that was originally taken
by our ancestors in the performing group at Papawai Marae
during the time of the Kotahitanga Maori Parliament
(1890’s). It was also the name of the famous
newspaper from Wairarapa that was used to carry the
messages of the Maori Parliament to iwi across the country.
The mountain top at Hikurangi was a place in the Pacific
Islands that our ancestors ran to at the time of Te Tai o
Ruatapu – The Great Tsunami of Ruatapu. The name is
therefore a metaphor for salvation. We intend for our group
to be a source of salvation for our whanau and hapu. The
language, words and themes in our items are largely drawn
from the wisdom of our ancestors.
