the Wairarapa. Included are the stories of trips taken
to find out more about the people and places of
Ngāti Hamua.
Looking at a number of local place names that have

Many people that have lived in the Wairarapa have heard
the story of Kupe and the Octopus. This version of the
story was recorded by Wairarapa rangatira Hoani Te
Whatahoro Jury.
In the Wairarapa we have our own taniwha and
supernatural beings. This collection provides the
stories of a selection of them. Most of the taniwha are
found in the Wairarapa although a few live a bit
further away but still have a close association with
the people of the region.
As befits a story of two young lovers this is the tale
of the handsome warrior Tupurupuru and the beautiful
maiden Konini.
