An extract from the unpublished book Mist on Rangitumau - Ngāti Hamua People and Places of the Past. This book is an account of the Ngāti Hamua hapū of the Wairarapa. Included are the stories of trips taken to find out more about the people and places of Ngāti Hamua.
Looking at a number of local place names that have either been abreviated or completely changed. For each place a full name, shortened name, commonly used name, approximate location and an explanation is provided.
Many people that have lived in the Wairarapa have heard the story of Kupe and the Octopus. This version of the story was recorded by Wairarapa rangatira Hoani Te Whatahoro Jury.
In the Wairarapa we have our own taniwha and supernatural beings. This collection provides the stories of a selection of them. Most of the taniwha are found in the Wairarapa although a few live a bit further away but still have a close association with the people of the region.
As befits a story of two young lovers this is the tale of the handsome warrior Tupurupuru and the beautiful maiden Konini.
